IHEDIOHA TASKS INCOMING IMO LAWMAKERS ON RESURRECTING THE LEGISLATURE

Incoming legislators of the 9th Assembly of Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) have been taken to task by the governor-elect, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, CON, KSC, challenging them to acquaint themselves appropriately with the real process of legislative duties and responsibilities of the State legislature.

Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha gave the charge in London on Sunday April 14, 2019 in his speech to Imo people resident in the United Kingdom (UK) who gathered at Aldridge Academy, Turlock Road, Tottenham, London for a victory celebration organized in his honour by Imo State Union UK.

He said: “I urge members-elect of the Imo State House of Assembly to quickly acquaint themselves with the existing rules of the House. I will inundate them with executive bills once the House is inaugurated.

“They must what the legislature should be; what it’s all about. This is because right from day one, upon their inauguration, I will challenge them with certain executive bills to keep them cracking.

“It’s sad that our legislature in Imo State had been practically dead in the past eight years because of the out-going governor’s approach that frustrated separation of powers.”

Since 2011, the lawmakers in Imo State have remained ineffective and inefficient owing to the way and manner the governor turned them into mere ceremonial, rubber stamp legislators that did only the bidding of the governor.

It’s most reassuring that the governor-elect, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha has indicated readiness to not only grant autonomy to the legislative arm of government, but also to keep them on their toes with legislative duties and responsibilities.
