According to Mr. Raymond Nkemdirim, the Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Security Matters, the meeting was called so that the unit commanders can rub mind with government to chat a new course, including over the recent events at Douglas Road, and other flashpoints.
It was a meeting to enable the Governor hear from the security agencies, as to what are their challenges, in order to be proactive instead of reactive, and further steps to be put in place to contain the situation.
In his opening remarks, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha indicated that the meeting will provide opportunity to reflect and to ask ourselves if we are giving our best services to our fatherland.
The Governor said, “” There is no gainsaying that we cannot make progress in government without security…We, as the elected, derives our mandate from the people, who expect us to defend them.
Governor pleaded with the Security Avencies, “” We want to plead with you to step up…We are not oblivious of the fact that you take risks…You know the nooks and crannies of our state…Fish out the bad elements so that they can stop conterminating us”
His Excellency said, “” The potentials of greatness is huge in Imo State…Something is wrong; there is a high element of criminality…We have been plugging some holes, people want to run down the state, I will remain honest to my people…We want to use our funds to be able to govern our state…We need our resources to tackle our problems…We are working very hard, working day and night for our state to look good again…We have a burden today, we are determined to close the gap, it does not come easy.
Continuing he said, “” People voted for me in expectation…I have a conscience to provide for them including roads, water and power supply…Most government facilities have no power and water supply, we have a low revenue base…We as a state have to pay the price of misgovernance of the past…Our finances were misused.
“” The burden we have found ourselves, only us can solve our problems…We are paying for the misdeeds, the carelessness, the mindlessness of the immediate past administration”
“” We cannot succeed in combating crime without the security agencies…What should bother you is the innocent man and woman who can be a victim. Anybody can be a target..Let us collectively decide to flush out the criminals in Imo State…We have limitations, but honestly, if we agree, if we begin to show example, we can begin to contain crime…When you punish offenders, it now serves as a deterent to others””.
